About Rutherford NJ

Rutherford is a borough in Bergen County, NJ, with an approximate population of 18,000 people. It was named after John Rutherfurd, a U.S. Senator who owned the land in the area. The specific reason for the change in the final syllable (“furd” to “ford”) is unknown, but it may have been the result of a clerical error by the United States Postal Service that had a facility named, strangely enough, the “Rutherford”. The town borders the Passaic River and the towns of Clifton and Passaic to its west, East Rutherford to its north, Secaucus to the southeast, and Lyndhurst to the southwest.
