Rockaway Township is a township located in Morris County, New Jersey. According to the 2018 census, the township’s population is estimated to be around 25,677 people. Rockaway Township was incorporated as a township in 1844 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It was taken from portions of Hanover and Pequannock Townships. Its name is derived from a Native American term, said to variously mean “place of sands”, “creek between two hills” or “bushy” / “difficult to cross”. Rockaway Township is bordered by the Morris County municipalities of Boonton, Denville, Dover, Jefferson, Kinnelon, Randolph, Rockaway Borough and Wharton. It is also bordered by West Milford in Passaic County.
